Mrtvica Canyon

Mrtvica river is a tributary of the Moraca river and they meet each other at the village Medjurijecje. It is filled with rapids, whirlpools, waterfalls, springs, and typical deep canyon vegetation. From both sides of the canyon, the steep cliffs reach up to 600–700 meters.

What makes the hike unforgettable are the sights of the two fairy-tale bridges, the Bijeli Nerini – springs that erupt from the rocks in the lower part of the canyon, the naturally formed ‘Gate of wishes’, and the military carved tunnel path.

How to get to there?

This true gem of untouched nature is located 30 km from Kolasin, under the mountains Maganik and Tali. From the direction of Kolasin, the entrance to the canyon can be reached by the old main road that leads to Podgorica. At the thirtieth kilometer from Kolasin, in the village of Medjurijecje, there is a sign on the right side of the road, where you go down to the parking lot, i.e. the beginning of the hiking trail.

The recommendation for hike:

Starting point: 190 meters above sea level, village of Međuriječje.
Goal: Canyon Mrtvice, Beach 586 masl.
Path: Easy III.
Trail length: 6.6 km (2 hours).
The period of the year most favorable for visit: spring, summer, autumn.

Do you know?

In 1973, a general in the army, Danilo Jaukovic, together with the locals and the army, mined the rocks and carved a passage through the canyon to connect two villages: Mrtvo Duboko and Velje Duboko. Since then, this passage has attracted many visitors.

Legend

The Gate of Wishes is a place where, according to a legend, a fairy from Maganik mountain fulfills wishes. In order to get your wish, you need to make a wish in complete silence and throw a rock in the river. The wish must be pure and it cannot be to anyone’s damage, otherwise, you can cause fairy’s wrath.
