Ethno camp

The Ethno Camp was founded in 2015 and is held every year from August 1 to 8. It is organized by the Public Institution Center for Culture Kolašin and the Cultural and Artistic Association "Mijat Mašković", and is supported by the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro, the Municipality of Kolašin and CIRTIP Kolašin. The camp is a pioneering venture in Montenegro, which gathers an increasing number of visitors every year and justifies its existence.

The main focus is on the dances of the Kolašin region, which are specially treated as intangible cultural heritage. Emphasis is also placed on the vocal heritage of Montenegro.

Ethno camp Kolašin, from the two originally recorded dances from the Kolašin region, has reached over 40 dances, some of which have been revitalized, some of which have been mentioned in the stories. Several very old chants were also recorded, so far unknown even to the professional public.

The camp brings together professors, students, pupils, members of cultural organizations and other interested parties, where they exchange their knowledge, experiences and skills through free workshops.

By bringing together students, pupils and their professors from surrounding faculties, says Davor Sedlarević, founder of the camp and head of the Kolašin KUD "Mijat Mašković", the goal is to recognize, document and study elements of intangible heritage that are in danger of disappearing. Revitalizing old ways of dancing and singing is one of the camp's tasks. Over 800 GB of audio-visual material has been recorded in recent years, which are mainly interviews with residents of Kolašin and surrounding villages. This rich material serves to learn about one's own heritage, scientifically interpret certain matrices and motifs that were practiced in the past, but also to strengthen local and national identity.

The camp offers completely free workshops in traditional dances/games and songs, as well as lectures and field research supervised by experts in the given fields.

The camp also organizes a public class for participants "Oj-ha in Kolašin" where participants perform songs and dances learned at the camp. There is also a competition in playing the Montenegrin kolo and shouting the traditional exclamation "Oj-ha".

The organizers invite "all those who know something more about games and songs, as well as good memorizers, players of folk instruments and singers to contact them so that their stories can be recorded and used for studying and passing on the heritage".
