Moraca Monastery
It is located on the banks of the Morača River, 25 km from Kolašin in the direction of Podgorica. It was built during the early reign of the Nemanjić dynasty. The founder of the monastery was Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić, son of Vukan and grandson of Stefan Nemanja. The monastery was built in 1252.
The monastery complex consists of two churches – the main one dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and another smaller church dedicated to Saint Nicholas. There is also a konak (lodge) within the monastery complex. Morača Monastery was built in the Raška style, while the main portal is in the Romanesque style.
The fresco ”The Raven Feeds the Prophet Elijah", created in the 13th century, is the oldest and most famous fresco of the Moracha Monastery.
Ćirilovac Monastery
Cirilovac Monastery is the youngest monastery in Montenegro. It was construction from 1995 to 1999, led by Archimandrite Joil Bulatovic, on the estate of his parents. The monastery is located at the foot of Kljuc Mountain, 10 km east of Kolasin. The main church of the monastery is dedicated to Saint Cyril and Methodius, and is popularly known as Cirilovac. In 2004, the monastery complex gained a chapel dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord, situated on the nearby peak at an altitude of 2,000 meters.
Church of Saint Demetrius
The Church of Saint Demetrius is a single-nave building constructed from finely cut stone, with a two-story bell tower and a semicircular altar apse. It is a typical example of architectural style from the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries in Montenegro. An inscription carved on a stone tablet above the entrance says: “This temple of Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr was built by the faithful ruler of Montenegro, Prince Nikola I Petrovic, in the year 1988.”
It is dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki.
