Walking tours

Mrtvica Canyon

Beginning of the trail: 190 m, (village) Međuriječje.
Destination: Mrtvice Canyon, Beach 586 m.
Elevation difference: 396 m.
Trail difficulty: Easy - Medium difficulty.
Trail length: 6.6 km.

Time required for the tour: 2 hours.

This is one of the most attractive and visited tours, and the canyon can be visited in spring, summer and autumn, although most departures are chosen in spring, when the water level of Mrtvice is high, and therefore the experience is greatest.

The trail starts from Međuriječje, above the meadow intended for parking. The trail is clearly visible and marked. After 1 km of walking, you come across a stone bridge. It was built by bishop Danilo I in the middle of the 19th century in memory of his mother.

The road continues above the bridge, along a marked path that climbs through the forest for a few hundred meters. Then you come out onto a country road that you follow all the way until you come out past the last house in the village near the beginning of the canyon.

Upon entering the canyon, the trail leads along the right side of the canyon the entire time. Forested areas and cliffs alternate every few hundred meters. We come across the first curiosity of the canyon – the “Gate of Wishes”, after which we continue further along the canyon, which becomes narrower and narrower, while the roar of water gushing from the cliffs becomes louder and louder. Soon we come across “Bijele Nerine”, a place where a huge amount of water gushes out from the stone cliffs. The last curiosity, and we can say the most attractive, is the one where the JNA army carved a hiking trail into the rock in the 1970s and connected two villages: Mrtvo Duboko and Velje Duboko. Passing this part of the trail should be done with caution. “Plaža” is a place in the canyon that you come across after this cut, after a few hundred meters, and it is also the end point of this tour.

Katun Jecmen Do

Beginning of the trail: Gornje Lipovo, 1,319 m.

Finish line: Ječmen Do, 1,600 m.

Elevation difference: 281 m.

Trail difficulty: Easy.

Trail length: 7.5 km.

Time required for the ascent: 2 hours and 30 minutes.

This tour starts on a macadam road that starts in the village of Gornje Lipovo and leads to the Vratlo pass to the Ječmen Do katun. It is one of the easier tours. Near the beginning of this tour is the Ropušica mountain spring. Very beautiful viewpoints and the typical flora of the Sinjajevina mountain make this tour very attractive.

Katun Ječmen Do is one of the larger katuns of Sinjajevina in the magnificent surroundings of the surrounding peaks and endless pastures.

Jablanov peak, the third highest peak of Sinjajevina

Start of the trail: 1,780 m, Grkovo (artificial reservoir).
Finish: Jablanov vrh, 2,203 m.
Elevation difference: 423 m.
Trail difficulty: Medium difficulty.
Trail length: 3.3 km.
Time required to climb: 2 hours.

This peak of Sinjajevina offers the best view of the Sinjajevina plateau (the largest plateau in the Balkans). The tour takes us through the fairy-tale landscapes of the village of Gornje Lipovo towards the Vratlo pass. It then continues to the Smrdan katun, and then the road splits into two directions. Follow the road on the right, towards the katun and Lake Grkovo (1,780 m), where the beginning of the trail is located. The sides of Jablanov vrh from this direction are quite clean and accessible, so the lack of markings is not a problem.

The peak has a rocky-grassy surface, very spacious and safe.

Trešnjevik – Lisa – Lumer – Bjelasica

Start of the trail: From Trešnjevik – foothills of Lisa and Lumer, 1,568 m.

Goal: Lisa 1,878 m, Lumer 1,867 m.

Altitude difference: Lisa 310 m, Lumer 299 m.

Trail difficulty: Easy.

Access to Lisa and Lumer is possible from two directions: from the direction of Trešnjevik and from the north from the direction of Vranjak. It is closer and easier from the south, and if you use an all-terrain vehicle, the best option is a circular tour. It is about 4.5 km from Trešnjevik to the foot of the Lisa, while it is about 7.5 km from the foot of the Lisa to the beginning of the path for the ascent to Lumer.

Lisa and Lumer are the highest peaks of the hills that stretch south-north between Komovi and Bjelasica. Along their entire length, there is a solid macadam road that runs along their foothills, so the climb to them is not strenuous, and the height difference between the beginning of the trail and the peaks is relatively small. The road goes along a mountain macadam pass and connects local katuns that are active during the summer.

This entire terrain is a combination of pastures, coniferous and deciduous forests, and you can also see herds of domestic animals as well as frequent scenes of herds of horses freely roaming the mountains.

The tour ends on Bjelasica, or rather with a descent to Jezerine by all-terrain vehicle.

From that turn, the road leads to the ramp where the entrance to the national park is paid. The lake is reached after 4 km on asphalt, next to which there is a parking lot. After 4 km, the road leads to a mountain pass from where it descends downhill to katun Goleš, a famous pastoral katun that has preserved its age-old shepherd tradition and enriched it with offers for tourists. When you reach the katun and the first hut, on the right side you will notice a path that leads diagonally uphill to the Bendovac viewpoint, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Biogradska Gora.

Eco-cotton Vranjak – Troglava – Zekova glava – Crna glava

The katun was created on the basis of tradition and life of the local population for centuries, up to the present day. The eco-katun produces local organic food and serves national specialties. The macadam road continues towards the mountain lodge “Bjelasica”, which is about 1 km from Vranjak. Here we already get our first impressions of the mountain and its undulating relief and rounded grassy peaks, including Troglava, which offers a view to the east and which we gradually climb along the macadam road.

To the south, there is a view of the Komovi and Ključ mountains, while to the north, a spacious valley with a rainforest and Biograd Lake opens up.

After half a kilometer of walking, you come to a crossroads: on the left, it continues towards the source of the Biogradska river and the foot of Troglava, and on the right, a good macadam road continues along the southern slopes of Troglava, which leads to Zekova glava. The fenced part of the peak is bypassed on the right and a narrow macadam road leads to one of the most beautiful viewpoints on Bjelasica. The view extends to Crna Glava and Pešića lake. It continues to the left along the edge and exits onto a clearer macadam road that leads to Crna Glava, the highest peak of Bjelasica, where this walking tour ends. On the way back, the road leads below Troglava and past the source of the Biogradska river and back to katun Vranjak.

Circular tour around Komovi

Beginning of the trail: Katun Štavna, 1,800 m.

Finish: The tour ends at the starting point - Štavna katun.

Elevation difference: 600 m.

Trail difficulty: Medium difficulty.

Trail length: 16 km.

Time required for the tour: 6 hours.

Komi occupy a relatively small mountain massif in terms of surface area, although in terms of the height of their peaks they are among the highest and most beautiful.

The circular tour around Komovi is a real attraction for nature lovers. Passing this trail is an opportunity to get to know the Komovi mountain range and is a tour without climbing any mountain peaks.

The starting position is the Štavna katun from which you continue on the north-eastern side of Vasojevićki Kom, with a view of the Prokletije massif and Mojanska planina. Then you reach the Carine katun, where there are several huts that are unfortunately not in use. Then follows the climb to Međukomlje, which involves a slightly higher climb and then a descent into the very core of Komovi, from where there is a beautiful view of all the petrified peaks that surround the observer, and especially Kučki Kom on the left, from where there is also the possibility of its ascent. Further along the gravel and narrow macadam road you reach Vasojevićki Kom and then the return to the Štavna katun, where the tour began.

Komovi / Vasojevićki, Kučki and Ljevorecki

The climb to these three peaks of Komovo represents a typical climbing tour with ascents from the very beginning and overcoming large differences in height. Depending on the place from which one starts, the length of the approach to the summit itself also depends. The most difficult approach, and the most technically demanding as well as the most risky ascent is to Kučka Kom, which is also the highest. It is recommended not to climb Kučki Kom in large groups due to the extremely loose terrain and the possibility of moving rocks that could endanger safety.

Vasojević's Kom

Beginning of the trail: Katun Štavna, 1,800 m.

Objective: Vasojevićki Kom, 2,461 m.

Elevation difference: 661 m.

Difficulty of the trail: Medium-Difficult.

Trail length: 3 km.

Time required for the ascent: 2 hours and 30 minutes.

About 2.5 km before the Štavna katun, the road branches off to the right, which takes you by all-terrain vehicle to Vasojevićki Kom itself, from where the climb to it begins. The path in the south direction turns into a long scree over a sloping slope from where the view of Kučki and Ljevorečki Kom begins to open up. After the scree, the road enters a sparse pine forest with a few climbs on a couple of hills and then the road leads to a steep sloping slope from which there is a wonderful view of the Štavna katun. When you reach the pass at an altitude of about 2,250 m, you reach “Verina prevoja” from where the part that is quite exposed and requires special attention begins. Not long after, you come across a rock about 100 m high that you have to go around and after which the climb becomes easier all the way to the top.

Bitch Kom

Beginning of the trail: Katun Štavna 1,800 m.

Finish: Kučki Kom, 2,487 m.

Elevation difference: 687 m.

Trail difficulty: Difficult.

Trail length: 3 km.

Time required for the ascent: 3 hours and 30 minutes.

The tour starts below Vasojevićki Kom, from where the road leads right to Kučki Kom along a path that changes from a grassy path to a gravel road through a pine forest with a couple of fallen trees that you have to go around to a scree that continues to the “Ploče” intersection at the very entrance to Međukomlje. From there, you go to the “Carina” pass, from where it is another 1 hour and 30 minutes to the top.

Then begins a much more demanding climb that leads into a couloir, a steep passage, a gentle descent to the sipar, and then the most dangerous and demanding part to the top. From the rock on which "Caution" is written, the ascent begins through a narrow couloir to the exit to the foot of the ridge, where there are exposed parts that should be climbed carefully. After that, the ascent continues to the very top, without additional difficulties.

Due to frequent falling of moving and loose rocks, wearing a helmet is recommended.

Ljevorec Kom

Beginning of the trail: Katun Ljuban 1,780 m.

Goal: Ljevorecki Kom, 2,469 m.

Elevation difference: 689 m.

Trail difficulty: Difficult.

Trail length: 2.4 km.

Time required for the ascent: 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The intersection at the Ljuban pasture leads in two directions: left, towards the Martinović pasture and right, towards the Labović hut, from which the trail to the summit begins. After passing the valley with the spring, it turns left, where the path continues to an easily passable grassy plateau right below Ljevorečki Kom, from where a steeper but still stable climb with a firm and grassy surface begins. The trail starts to get strenuous when you cross into a much rockier part where caution and good concentration are necessary. You also come across a pass from which you can see the summit itself.

At the pass between the two peaks of Ljevorecki Kom, there is a stone rock in the shape of a coupe. The path passes under it and comes under the highest peak from where the most demanding part of the ascent is to come.

The start of the ascent implies helping with the hands, after which a large drop opens on the left side of the path, which is why the center of gravity of the body should be shifted to the right side. Another climb of about 10 meters follows, but without danger, after which the path turns right to the top. On the way to the top, there are still a few destination meters left, but with extra caution because the path briefly passes by the beams themselves.
